Yaquina Bay Hotel
in Toledo, Oregon, founded in 1920 as
"Lincoln Hotel" and is the 'gateway to Yaquina Bay". It's located near the
Oregon Coast, but without the crowds! Just a short walk to Yaquina Bay River
follows the Yaquina Bay Road Scenic Route for thirteen miles to Newport, a
leisurely 25 minutes drive. You will see all historic markers such as City of
Toledo, Craigie Point, Boone Family Homestead, Oyster City and Yaquina City.
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is said to have a ghost. According to the
story, the fictional Muriel Trevenard fell to her death there and her ghost
haunts the light to this day. Another story is of two lovers who were leaving
the light house, when the women returned inside to get her forgotten scarf. A
scream was heard, and her companion entered the light house, he found nothing
but the scarf, with a spot of blood on it. And at night, at midnight, some day
the women's screams can still be heard. The lighthouse is open to visitors.

The Pulp and Paper Mill
-
Just few blocks down from the Hotel. In
1957, Georgia-Pacific began the construction of the new facility at Toledo - an
integrated pulp and paper mill designed to utilize the residual chip material
from the existing on-site sawmill. The Toledo mill is the hall mark of G-P's
entry into the pulp and paper business. They manufacture containerboard,
including unbleached linerboard and corrugating medium that is converted into
corrugated boxes and packing at numerous box plants on the West Coast from
Washington to California and Mexico. The packaging is used for a variety of
products such as fruit, vegetables, seafood, tissue, paper products, packaged
food and beverages. Their recent investing reduced the mill's dependence on wood
chips for the pulp making process and more than doubled the mill's recycling
capacity-which has reached 60% recycled material. The production capacity is
over 2,500 tons per day on 3 paper machines and recycled over 500,000 tons
annually with approx. 420 employee, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week operation. Phone # is 541-336-2211.
